Track Reach Beyond Direct Connections With New Twitter Notifications

Twitter is expanding its existing notification system to give you more insight into what’s happening among your followers’ followers.

Notifications make it easy to stay informed of activity happening around your brand or content on a social network. Depending on your settings, Twitter currently alerts you when someone mentions your @username, retweets or favorites one of your tweets, and when someone follows you. Although helpful, this system limited you to activity among direct connections.

Now, Twitter will notify you when someone favorites a tweet you were mentioned in. So in addition to discovering when people favorite one of your own tweets, you’ll now be notified by when someone else’s tweet — which features your @username — is favorited by one of their followers. This is a great way to track what’s happening beyond your direct connections.

Additionally, it appears you’ll also receive notifications when another member retweets a tweet you retweeted. This is a helpful way to track your reach, as well as to see how your content performs. If your retweets get more engagement than your original content, it might be time to make some changes to your strategy.

While potentially useful, not everyone wants to clutter their inboxes with notifications. If you think you already receive too many notifications from Twitter, you can always adjust the email alerts you get by visiting your settings.
